Septimus in the Trenches - This piece was inspired by the book Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Wolfe. The character Septimus has PTSD, like me, and I loved that. He has a tragic flaw (I don’t want to spoil the ending for you!), but he is amazingly really, and Virginia Wolfe paints such sad, beautiful reality with her words. I tried to mimic that in my colors.
This piece can be looked at in any direction, as the world seems to turn and twist when you are having a flashback or disassociating. Waves along the bottom, soldiers’ helmets as they match along to death. A body, or is it? Flowers grow from that hill or body or whatever it seems to be. A child plays with its ball as people sit on a park bench by a fountain (or maybe deadly gas headed towards the sleeping body?), knowing nothing it seems of the bigger picture. Fall and spring line the edges, fire and growth, things that require each other and yet are totally contradictory.
